Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars

Microdermabrasion diagram and Machine (Bhalla, et al)

Microdermabrasion is a technique that abrades the skin with a high-pressure flow of crystals. Microdermabrasion works by removing the outer layers of the epidermis. This process can remove some skin irregularities, as well as stimulate a healing process which can lead to increased collagen production and a structural improvement in the dermis. It offers some improvement in patients with mild acne scarring, but is less effective for deep scars. It can help improve the appearance of wrinkles, uneven skin tone and mild rolling scars. This technique is often used in conjunction with other approaches as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for acne scars. Microdermabrasion has also been sparingly used as a treatment for mild, non-inflammatory acne.
